Our membership continues to grow in
numbers and our ability to assist members with training has been
enhanced, thanks to the outreach our current members have done and the
slight increase in biweekly dues. We promised our members that we
would be awarding scholarships this year and we have fulfilled on this
promise. On September 25, 2008, we will be awarding three $1,000.00
scholarships to qualified members who are currently furthering their
education. The honored recipients are: Captain Jeri Weinstein,
Lieutenant Ann Barrera and Officer Sha’quana Hall. Congratulations
and the best of luck to all of them. This is a very first for our
organization and we are very excited about being in a position where
we could assist our members in furthering their education with
scholarship assistance. LAWPOA, as an organization, will continue to
seek out ways to demonstrate equality and inclusiveness in everything
we do. To this end, earlier this year the board of directors
unanimously voted to re-title the name of the LAWPOA Woman of the Year
Award to LAWPOA Leadership Excellence Award. This new title will
ensure that both men and women LAWPOA members have equal opportunity
to be nominated for and be awarded these prestigious awards. The
awards will be divided into sworn and civilian categories. It is our
hope that both sworn and civilian LAWPOA members who have demonstrated
leadership excellence are equally represented. We are pleased to also
celebrate the selection of these honored recipients during the
September Awards Luncheon. The recipients are: Chief Psychologist
Kevin Jablonski (Civilian category) and Lieutenant II Kathryn Meek
(Sworn Category). Our congratulations to them both!!
Most of you know that in the past,
we have presented the Woman of the Year Award at the Women’s
Leadership Conferences during the lunch break. After consideration by
the board of directors, it was determined that these awards should be
presented during a special awards ceremony so those recipients may be
afforded the opportunity to have family, co-workers and supervisors
attend.
We are in the process of designing a
number of lunch training workshops. In the past few months we have
provided two workshops, 1) Doing your best on promotional oral
interviews and 2) Fearless Public Speaking. Both of the workshops
were well attended. Mark your calendars for the next workshop on
Emergency Preparedness to be given on October 15th in North
Hollywood Division. The announcement will be posted on the LANS.
Thank you all for your continued
expressions of confidence in LAWPOA!
On October 27, 2006 Officer Danita Marsh, Nashville (TN) police
officer, was ambushed while sitting in her patrol vehicle trying to
assist a domestic violence victim. That fateful day changed a lot of
lives. It changed Danita's Marsh's life forever. She is now
paralyzed from the waist
down.
Extreme Makeover-Home Edition has been asked to assist Officer Marsh in
achieving her goal that she vowed to walk again.
Show how much you believe in that goal by putting
your name down to let ABC
Producers know that we want this story of courage and determination
to make the show for a newly built house for Danita Marsh and her
son, to meet their special needs.
