Upon graduating from college, Kosal Bun entered the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Academy in 1996, and has 19 years of service. Bun has worked Northeast, Van Nuys, Newton, and 77th Patrol Divisions. Additionally, Bun was assigned to Gang and Narcotics Division (GND) working the Gun Detail and Asian Crimes Unit. Bun has since promoted to the rank of Detective.
While at Newton Division, Detective Bun was involved in creating and starting the Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART). When assigned to GND, Bun being a Department expert in Khmer (Cambodian) has been used not only by LAPD, but other agencies as well. In one instance, Bun was requested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to translate for them. The case involved international organized crime operating in the United States, Canada, and Cambodia. The results of the investigation were convictions on all suspects.
Additionally, Detective Bun has worked with the Department of Justice (DOJ); Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF); and numerous other local agencies regarding gun trafficking investigations.
Bun is currently assigned to Detective Bureau working the Department’s Domestic Violence Unit. Due to Bun’s prior experience in the DART Unit, this experience has helped shaped the Mayor Eric Garcetti’s DART expansion program. This program is citywide which provides a victim of Domestic Violence an advocate with the first responder at this traumatic crime scene. Bun also oversees the U/T-Visa database for the Department. Bun was awarded the Department’s Life Saving medal for assisting a woman delivering a healthy baby girl on the streets on Van Nuys Division. Bun was also awarded the Dove award for creating and forming the Newton DART
program working within the community.
