“Our mission is to strengthen, unite and raise the profile of women in law enforcement.”

LAWPOA, established in 1925, is administered directly by law enforcement officials and is open to both women and men. Today, we support women and men in the public safety profession by contributing to their educational and career development, as well as providing professional networking avenues, scholarships, training, and peer mentoring.

Our History

Over the years, we have had many courageous women overcome discrimination within the department and we are proud to say that the LAPD is the birthplace of the first female officer. The Los Angeles Policewomen's Association (LAWPOA) was co-founded by Alice Stebbins Wells and Marguerite Curley in 1925. Their original goal was to provide benefits, appreciation, and respect, as well as create a community for female officers. Today, LAWPOA has over 500 members and 1,757 female officers in the Los Angeles Police Department.

Board Members

Our board members include public safety and affiliate professionals who are dedicated to making law enforcement better. We understand the importance of continued education and professional training for our officers. We actively encourage and assist with ongoing training and development for all law enforcement leaders.

We've been around for quite a while now and we know how to come together in order to promote and increase the representation of women in leadership positions in the public safety profession. Learn more about our mission of contributing to our member's educational and career goals by embracing diverse opinions, respecting others, embracing our differences, and our major focus on quality relationships within the law enforcement agencies and with the community at large.

  • LAWPOA Made Me Who I Am Today

The thoughtful leadership and care of LAWPOA has made this big-city agency feel small and connected. I know that I always have the resources and help that I need to succeed. If it were not for LAWPOA, I would not have been able to grow my career the way that I have.
