Sergeant Katie Lawson |
Sergeant Katie Lawson joined the Oklahoma City Police Department in 2006. She is a graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Since her employment with the police department she has worked in various units, such as Patrol, Vice, Child Abuse Unit, and did a short stint with the DEA Office. Katie is currently assigned to a specialized unit within the Operations Bureau. She is also a member of her department’s Negotiator Team and Honor Guard, as well as on the executive board of the Association of Oklahoma Narcotic Enforcers.
On Aug. 29, 2010, Sergeant Lawson sustained six gunshot wounds while assisting an Oklahoma County deputy with a traffic arrest. Her assailant tried to distract officers from arresting his father for driving while under the influence. The attacker opened fire with an AR-15 and shot 26 rounds into her police car. Six shots hit her — in the chest, back, buttocks, leg and one bullet skimmed her right cheek and pierced her ear. Katie will tell her riveting story and share at the symposium how she returned fire at her assailant and managed to survive this lethal encounter.
