Public Safety Director

Commander Cheryl Newman-Tarwater  is  honored to be the first outside agency member appointed to be the Public Safety Director for LAWPOA.  She is a 29 year veteran with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and she currently is assigned to Custody Division-Specialized Programs, overseeing operations at Century Regional Detention Facility (CRDF).
 
Her previous assignment was the Captain of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Community College Bureau.  She was responsible for overseeing the policing of the 9 colleges and three satellite facilities within the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD).  LACCD is the largest community college district in the nation with over 135,000 full time students, over 6,000 full time faculty and staff, and thousands of part-time students, faculty and staff.  Ten school districts funnel into LACCD, including the Los Angeles Unified School District.

She has worked a variety of assignments throughout her career beginning with a custody assignment at Sybil Brand Institute for women; patrol assignments at Lakewood, West Hollywood, and Pico Rivera Sheriff Stations; three different teaching assignments, Mandated Training, Emergency Vehicle Operations Center (EVOC), and Recruit Training, at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Training Academy; and an administrative position at the Department’s Personnel Division supervising an investigative background and hiring team. 

Commander Newman-Tarwater has a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University Dominguez Hills.  She is a Mental Health instructor for California State University, Long Beach, Center for Criminal Justice.  She is married and has 4 children.
